How is the freelance rate calculated?

Your hourly rate is not simply your desired monthly salary divided by 160 hours. A freelancer has operating expenses, non-billable hours, taxes, and needs a buffer for slow periods. This calculator takes all those factors into account.

The basic formula

Billable hours = (Hours/week × (52 - vacation weeks)) × (1 - %non_billable)
Annual gross income = Desired net income + Expenses + Taxes (20% estimate)
Minimum rate = Annual gross income / Billable hours
Recommended rate = Minimum rate × 1.3 (operating margin)

Frequently Asked Questions

Ranges vary greatly by seniority and skill. Junior: $20-$40/h. Mid: $40-$75/h. Senior: $75-$150/h. Specialists in areas like ML, blockchain, or AWS can charge more. The key is to position yourself based on the value you generate, not what you "think you deserve".

Always negotiate and invoice in USD with international clients. Use Wise, Payoneer, or Deel to receive payment in USD and then convert. This protects you from local currency devaluation.

Raise your rate when: you have more demand than you can handle, you've acquired new high-value skills, your client portfolio has strengthened, or it's been more than a year since you last reviewed it. Annual increases of 15-25% are reasonable in the tech market.
