Overview
Physical Superintelligence is a startup with roots at Google, NVIDIA, Harvard, Meta, MIT, Oxford, Johns Hopkins, Cambridge, and the Perimeter Institute building AI systems to discover new physics at scale. We are seeking engineers to build platform infrastructure at the intersection of computational science, AI systems, and software engineering.
Our mission is to discover and commercialize transformative physics breakthroughs at scale with artificial superintelligence, safely, verifiably, and for broad public benefit.
The last century's golden age of physics gave us transistors, lasers, and nuclear energy. We believe artificial superintelligence will unlock the next one. We're creating the infrastructure to industrialize scientific discovery and usher in this new era.
We have one product: new physics, at scale.
Use this application if you are an engineer, no open engineering role fits your profile, and you want to be considered anyway. We hire excellent engineers when we find them, whether or not a matching role is open. Tell us how your background and ambitions intersect with our mission, and where you would have the most impact.
Role and Responsibilities
Our platform spans distributed systems, data infrastructure, agent systems and evaluation, HPC and scientific computing, developer platforms, product engineering, cloud infrastructure, and security. This application is for engineers who are strong across most of that list, or unusually deep in something important we did not list. The bar here is higher than any single posting.
The standard is the same as every engineering role here: full ownership from spec to ship to on-call, and systems other people build on.
Be specific about where you would have the most impact and what you would work on first.
We review these applications on a rolling basis and respond only when we see a strong fit.
What We're Looking For
A track record of shipping substantive engineering work: systems that shipped and mattered, open source people depend on, infrastructure that outlived your tenure. We weight evidence over credentials.
Depth in several of the areas above and the range to move between them, or singular depth in something important we did not list.
You can walk us through a hard technical decision you made, what you traded away, and what you would do differently.
A concrete reason to be here. If AI systems and physical science together is why you are applying, say so specifically.
Nice to Have
Background in any of our named areas: distributed systems, data infrastructure, agent systems and evals, HPC and scientific computing, developer platforms, product engineering, infrastructure, or security.
Experience in research or scientific computing environments.
Something we can read or run: a design doc, a paper, a repo, a postmortem.
How We Work
We hold a high technical bar and give people full ownership of their work, from spec to ship to on-call. We write contracts before logic, test against real systems instead of mocks, and favor simple designs that ship over clever ones that do not. Our development process is AI-native: we work with agentic coding tools daily, write specs that are legible to humans and agents alike, and lead with leverage.
Location and Compensation
This role is based in Boston. We will consider remote candidates on a case-by-case basis. We offer competitive compensation including salary, benefits, and meaningful early-stage equity. We evaluate on technical breadth, systems thinking, scientific curiosity, and shipping velocity. We are an equal opportunity employer and value diverse perspectives in building platforms for AI-driven discovery.

We partner with MSK provider groups and specialty clinics to help them grow, operate more efficiently, and deliver better longitudinal care across patient acquisition, clinical workflows, and ongoing patient engagement. Our platform sits at the intersection of care delivery and clinic operations, helping providers capture more value across the full patient lifecycle.
Weâve recently raised our Series B and are entering our next phase of growth.
We are building out our sales team to create a scalable, high-performing revenue organization and take the company from founder-led sales to a repeatable, metrics-driven GTM engine.
As a Sales Development Representative, youâll be the first point of contact with prospective customers and play a critical role in generating pipeline for the sales team. - Develop relationships with key decision-makers and stakeholders, uncover business challenges, and position the companyâs solutions to generate interest and meetings.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of prospect interactions, activities, and pipeline progression within the CRM.
- Conduct research on target accounts, industries, competitive landscapes, and key stakeholders to personalize outreach and improve conversion rates.
- Continuously refine messaging, outreach strategies, and prospecting workflows based on performance data and market feedback.
- Partner closely with Account Executives, Marketing, and Leadership to align on target accounts, campaign effectiveness, and revenue goals.
- Gather and share insights from prospects regarding market trends, competitive offerings, customer pain points, and buying behaviors.
- 1+ years of experience in sales development, business development, recruiting, or customer-facing roles, preferably within SaaS or healthcare technology environments.
- Demonstrated ability to consistently achieve or exceed activity and pipeline generation goals.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to engage senior-level decision-makers.
- Experience using CRM platforms (Attio, Salesforce, HubSpot) and sales engagement tools such as ZoomInfo, Clay, Apollo, Outreach, or Salesloft.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple prospecting campaigns simultaneously.
- Highly coachable with a desire to learn modern sales methodologies and advance into closing roles.
- Comfortable operating in a fast-paced startup environment with evolving priorities and processes.
- Relentlessly driven and highly competitive.
- Resilient in the face of rejection and persistent in pursuing opportunities.
- Naturally curious and eager to understand customer challenges.
- Takes ownership and consistently follows through on commitments.

Know what matters before it becomes a problem.
Curcle Clarity turns the records your business already creates into evidence-backed answers, morning briefings and contextual findings â so engineers arrive prepared, office teams know what to chase and leaders see what needs attention.
Book a Clarity demo See how Ask Curcle works
Real product, real seeded data â every answer shows what it is based on.
Not another dashboard. Not another chatbot.
Most software tells you what happened. Curcle Clarity helps you understand what matters.
Traditional software
- âStores records
- âDisplays reports
- âLeaves people to connect the dots
- âOften hides where an answer came from
- Connects records across the operation
- Answers real operational questions
- Shows the evidence behind every answer
- States when the evidence is insufficient
- Keeps decisions with people
Ask Curcle
Ask a real operational question.
Open Ask Curcle anywhere in the platform (Cmd/Ctrl + J), type a plain-language question and it is matched to Curcleâs approved question library. The answer is calculated from live records, scoped to what you are allowed to see and linked back to its evidence. Question in, evidenced answer out â no open-ended chat thread, no conversational memory.
Engineer
- âHas anyone worked at this site before?â
- âWhat parts were used last time?â
- âWhat does my week look like?â
- âIs my van stock running low?â
- âWhich quotes need chasing?â
- âWhich jobs are waiting on something?â
- âWhich customers have gone quiet?â
- âWhich certificates are approaching lapse?â
- âWhich jobs are unassigned?â
- âWhere are double bookings forming?â
- âWhich jobs are approaching SLA?â
- âDoes the team have capacity this week?â
- âWhich contracts have gone unusually quiet?â
- âHow has aged debt moved?â
- âIs the team under pressure?â
- âWhat is going well?â
Start the day prepared, not overwhelmed.
Curcle Daily gives each role a short morning briefing drawn from the same evidence-backed Clarity engine.
Engineer Daily
- Today's sites, with access and parking notes
- Previous visits and asset history
- Parts used last time
- Risks worth knowing before leaving
- Customers to call and quotes to chase
- Jobs waiting on something
- Certificates approaching lapse
- Staff returning from leave
- Unassigned work and SLA pressure
- Capacity for the week
- Clashes forming
- How the week is taking shape
- Contracts gone quiet against their own history
- Aged-debt movement
- Team-level workload pressure
- Good news, given equal standing
Clarity findings
Useful answers, exactly where the decision is made.
Discreet, evidence-backed findings appear on the customer, job and quote pages you already work in â and hide completely when there is nothing useful to say. No empty placeholders. No manufactured urgency.
Customer page
Overdue retests and outstanding invoices surfaced above the compliance score â with the evidence a click away.
Job page
What happened on previous visits to the same asset, before the engineer sets off.
Quotes
Quotes that meet the agreed chase criteria, ranked deterministically â not by an algorithm's mood.
Curcle noticed.
A compact dashboard panel surfaces a handful of findings that need attention â a compliance item, a commercial item, an operational item. The ranking is deterministic, positive findings get equal standing, and it never shows more than a few things at once.
- Two certificates approach lapse next week.
- Three quotes meet the chase criteria.
- No schedule conflicts are forming today.
- 1 Curcle reads the records your operational work already creates.
- 2 Deterministic logic produces a structured finding â no AI sits in this path.
- 3 The finding carries its evidence, its freshness and who may see it.
- 4 Optional plain-language phrasing makes it easier to read â and is discarded if it doesn't match the finding.
- 5 The person remains responsible for the decision.
Every answer linked to source records
Evidence age shown plainly
âNot enough evidenceâ is a valid answer
Visibility enforced by role and customer scope
No individual league tables
No autonomous decisions
AI assists; people decide
One evidence base. The right perspective for every role.
Each role receives only the findings and evidence they are entitled to see â enforced on the server, not by the interface.
Engineer
Arrives prepared â site history, parts used last time and access notes, with person-scoped findings kept self-only.
Office
Knows what to chase â quotes meeting the agreed criteria, jobs waiting on something and certificates approaching lapse.
Scheduler
Sees the week taking shape â unassigned work, SLA pressure and capacity, before they become Monday-morning surprises.
Director
Sees what needs attention at business level â never private individual-performance findings. Person-scoped findings remain self-only.
Customer
Asks about their own record only â outstanding retests or unpaid invoices â scoped strictly to their customer account.
Clarity does not pretend to know.
When there is not enough evidence, Curcle says so. âNot enough evidenceâ is a first-class answer â shown plainly, with how many records it was based on.
Honest uncertainty is more useful than a confident guess.
With the Operations Room
The Operations Room can draw on evidence-backed Clarity findings to prepare the agenda and give leaders better context. Clarity doesnât replace the meeting â decisions and actions remain human-owned.
Explore the Operations Room
With the Compliance Control Tower
The Control Tower calculates expected-versus-actual compliance deterministically. Clarity helps you ask questions about the resulting evidence â it does not decide legal compliance through AI.
Explore compliance in Curcle

A Day-in-a-Life of our Business Development ManagerÂ
As a Business Development Manager at EatClub, you will spend most of your time out in the market, meeting venue owners, building relationships, and growing the platform one partnership at a time.
Your territory is yours to build. You'll be walking into restaurants, calling operators, and scheduling meetings with the venues you believe will thrive on the platform. Some days start with mapping the neighbourhoods you want to focus on, identifying the venues that fit the product best, and planning how you'll approach them.
Most of your day is spent face-to-face with restaurant owners and managers. You're introducing EatClub, explaining how the platform works, and helping operators see how it can drive more customers through their doors. Conversations move quickly - some venues sign up after one conversation, others take a few follow-ups - but momentum matters and your pipeline moves fast. Average time from first walk-in to signed agreement is under two weeks. You are not waiting on approval chains - you close and move on to the next one.
Between meetings, you're updating your pipeline, following up with prospects, and preparing for the next round of conversations.
You'll also work closely with the broader EatClub team, sharing insights about the local hospitality market, feeding back what venue owners are saying, and helping refine how we approach new cities as we expand across the AU.
This role suits someone who thrives working independently, does not need a manager to tell them what to do next, and gets genuine satisfaction from seeing a number on a board they built themselves.
On any given week, you will be:
- Prospecting new restaurant partners through walk-ins, cold calls, and scheduled meetings.
- Meeting venue owners and operators face-to-face across Tasmania
- Delivering clear, confident product pitches that show how EatClub helps venues drive revenue.
- Building and managing a high-volume pipeline of opportunities in your territory.
- Negotiating and closing commercial agreements with venue partners.
- Onboarding newly signed venues and supporting them through their first campaigns.
- Tracking pipeline activity and maintaining accurate CRM records.
- Hitting 15+ outbound activities daily - calls, walk-ins, and booked meetings combined.
- Knowing your numbers: conversion rate, daily activity volume, and weekly pipeline value.
Type of projects you'll be working on at EatClub...
- Launching EatClub into new Tasmanian cities: building strong venue pipelines, identifying priority neighbourhoods, and helping establish EatClub's presence in new markets.
- Refining the sales playbook: sharing feedback from venue owners to improve outreach messaging, objection handling, and sales conversations.
- Supporting new city launches. As we continue to grow, you will have a chance to be part of the team that kicks off new cities.
You have....
- A proven track record in a high-volume, target-driven role - and the numbers to back it up. Not roughly. Specifically.
- Comfort with high outbound activity, including cold outreach and in-person conversations.
- Experience managing a pipeline and progressing deals independently.
- Confidence in presenting solutions and negotiating commercial agreements.
- A background that has tested your resilience: high-rejection environments, door-to-door, car sales, sport or high-volume outbound all count.
- The ability to tell us your KPI attainment, conversion rate, and average deal cycle without having to look it up.
It would be extra awesome if you also had...
- Previously worked in hospitality, food tech, SaaS, or marketplace businesses.
- A strong network within the hospitality industry.
- Experience helping launch or grow new markets or territories.
You are...
- Driven and persistent - you stay motivated even when deals take time or conversations don't immediately convert.
- Competitive and performance-oriented - you enjoy working towards clear targets and seeing the results of your effort.
- Curious and thoughtful - you ask good questions to understand how venues operate and what matters to them.
- Disciplined in your approach - you manage your time, territory, and pipeline with structure.
- Quick to learn and adapt - you take feedback onboard and apply it quickly.
- Committed to building a career in sales within a high-growth business.
- Able to flip between high-volume outbound activity and in-person closing in the same day - without losing energy.
- Energised by building from scratch, not maintaining what already exists.
- Someone whose first instinct when a deal stalls is to go back to basics - not to escalate.
Maybe this role is not for you if....
- You prefer desk-based or fully remote work.
- You're uncomfortable with cold outreach or face-to-face selling.
- You avoid targets, metrics, or performance accountability.
- You need highly structured days with little autonomy.
- You're not open to flexible hours tied to hospitality service times.
- You are looking for the stability and processes of a large tech company. We are not that yet - and that is the point.
- You cannot clearly articulate your performance metrics from your last role.
If you're curious about what we're building, you're welcome to explore EatClub ahead of your interview. First-time users who choose to give it a try can use the code "ECAPPLY5" for an optional $5 voucher to test the experience. This is entirely voluntary and has no impact on your application or interview process.
P.S. We are currently interviewing for roles starting on August 17, and selected candidates will be expected to start on those dates.
One last note: even if you feel that you don't meet all the criteria above, we encourage you to apply. Past work experience is not the only indicator of future success, and we are on the look out for hungry talent who wants to grow with us. So if you want to be a part of something remarkable, then we're excited to hear from you.

What You'd Be Doing In This Role
The Production Engineering team sits at the intersection of software engineering and the hardest reliability problems in Canva's infrastructure. At 240M MAUs, the hardest problems aren't on any product roadmap. Production Engineering exists to find them first and fix them properly. Writing software. Changing how production behaves. When it works, every team ships with more confidence and Canva gets faster and more resilient for the people who use it every day.
The strategic bet is a different model entirely. Canva's own take on what production reliability looks like, built for how we work. Senior software engineers embedded long-term in the areas that carry the most technical risk, working shoulder to shoulder with product teams, close enough to the roadmap to shape how features land in production before the problems compound. Not operationalising systems. Not running alerts. Writing software that changes how production behaves.
The engineers who do this work well have gone deep in systems most people only operate. They can walk into a codebase they didn't write, understand what's actually happening at scale, win the technical respect of the team they're embedded with, and then bend the software to make it more reliable, more efficient, and more resilient.
At Principal level, you're also the person who defines what this practice looks like at Canva. The calibration anchor for every hire, every engagement, and every standard the team sets.
At the moment, this role is focused on:
- Defining the engagement model: How Production Engineering pairs with product and infrastructure teams, how engagements are scoped, and what handoff actually looks like. This model is new. You're shaping it.
- Leading the hardest engagements: Taking personal ownership of the most technically complex areas, sharding, multi-region architecture, JVM performance at scale, while the team builds depth in adjacent domains.
- Setting the technical bar: What it means to be a production engineer at Canva. The standard for technical credibility. The archetype that future hiring calibrates against.
- Pairing strategy across the team: Deciding how staff and mid-level engineers are paired and what they should be learning from each engagement. Growing production engineering capability across the org, not just within the team.
- Connecting to the product roadmap: Working with engineering leadership across Canva to ensure Production Engineering is upstream of problems, not downstream. Influencing how product teams think about production readiness before they ship.
- Building the measurement story: Incident severity and duration trending down. Feature launches going to production cleanly. You define what the metrics are and how they're tracked.
- Compounding at organisation scale: One well-placed Production Engineering engagement changes how engineers build for years. At Principal level, your leverage is the sum of all those engagements, plus the standard you set for how each one runs.
- What success looks like: As a secondee, developing trusted relationship with your team. Guiding them towards, shipping at velocity, with more confidence and less toil.
We'd love to hear from you if you fit one or more of these. You don't need to meet all of them, but the more the better and if you join the team, we're invested in helping you grow.
Experience
- Production at scale: You've owned reliability in large-scale distributed systems. When things went brake, you investigate how and shipped the solution that lasts forever.
- Technical leadership in embedded models: You've led or helped shape a function where engineers work across team boundaries rather than within a single one. You know what makes that model work and what makes it fail.
- Hands-on through seniority: You've stayed close to the code. At this level, you're the engineer others consult when the problem is genuinely hard.
- Cross-org influence: You've shaped how teams outside your own make technical decisions because your technical judgement is trusted.
- JVM or systems depth: You've built real things in Java, Go, Rust, C++, or a comparable systems language at production scale. Language matters less than depth.
- Distributed systems in practice: You've navigated sharding, replication, failure modes, and consistency tradeoffs in production.
- Linux internals: You can reason about process scheduling, memory, I/O, and the network stack when a system misbehaves.
- Distributed systems: You've navigated sharding, replication, failure modes, and consistency tradeoffs in production. As well as consistent hashing, leader election, consensus, backpressure, circuit breakers
- Observability tooling: You've built the tracing, dashboards, and alerting that tells you what's wrong.
- Containerisation and orchestration: Kubernetes in production, at the scheduler level.
- Performance analysis: You've profiled JVM applications or systems-level processes and fixed what you found.
- Cloud infrastructure: AWS in production, across the failure modes that matter at scale.
- Incident response: You've been on-call and have opinions about what good looks like.
- Enterprise SaaS background: You've done this specific kind of work at an org that's done it well. You know what "production engineering" means when it's not just a job title.
- JVM internals: You've tuned GC and profiled threads in production.
- Multi-region or sharding experience: You've been involved in a data store migration or multi-region architecture where getting it wrong was not an option.
Join the Production Engineering Group at Canva, where our mission is to make every system that powers Canva fast, reliable, and ready for the next scale. Infra owns the infrastructure layer that every other team builds on: compute, storage, networking, developer experience, and reliability.
The Reliability Platform subgroup is where Canva thinks seriously about the technical risk that comes with operating at hundreds of millions of users. It's a group with broad scope, from the tooling that helps teams run incidents well, to the engineering work that stops incidents from happening in the first place.
Production Engineering sits within Reliability Platform. A small team of senior software engineers embedded in Canva's highest-risk technical areas, working alongside the product and infrastructure teams who own those systems for a long-term engagements. When it works, other teams ship more confidently and the incidents that do happen resolve faster and hurt less.
Whatâs in it for you?
Achieving our crazy big goals motivates us to work hard â and we do â but you'll experience lots of moments of magic, connectivity and fun woven throughout life at Canva, too. We also offer a range of benefits to set you up for every success in and outside of work.
Here's a taste of what's on offer:
- Equity packages â we want our success to be yours too
- Inclusive parental leave policy that supports all parents & carers
- An annual Vibe & Thrive allowance to support your wellbeing, social connection, office setup & more
- Flexible leave options that empower you to be a force for good, take time to recharge and supports you personally
We see AI as a powerful amplifier of creativity and technology at Canva. We're evolving how we assess AI skills in our Technology hiring experience, you'll tackle interactive, real-time challenges that reflect the kind of work we do. In some interviews, you may also be asked to solve a problem using an AI tool to show how you approach challenges with tech by your side.
We make hiring decisions based on your experience, skills and passion, as well as how you can enhance Canva and our culture.
When you apply, please tell us the pronouns you use and any reasonable adjustments you may need during the interview process. We celebrate all types of skills and backgrounds at Canva, so even if you don't feel like your skills quite match what's listed above â we still want to hear from you!
Please note that interviews are conducted virtually.

Creative Strategist - Ramen Bae
ABOUT RAMEN BAE
Ramen Bae is the original dried ramen toppings company on a mission to level up the ramen category.
We started three years ago as a passion project because we wanted better instant ramen toppings and couldnât find anything like it. Since then, weâve gone viral, built a loyal fan base, grown to over 400,000 customers, and recently launched protein ramen. Weâre still just getting started.
Weâre a small, fast-moving team of builders who take ownership, move quickly, and figure things out as we go. Weâre looking for another like-minded person who is excited to help us build the next great ramen brand.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Ramen Bae is looking for a Creative Strategist to build and lead the creative engine behind our DTC ramen brand.
This person will own performance-driven creative across paid social, with Meta currently being our largest channel. Youâll be responsible for understanding our products, customers, audience awareness stages, and performance data, then turning those insights into ad concepts, hooks, scripts, creator briefs, and video assets that convert.
This role sits at the intersection of performance marketing, creative strategy, consumer psychology, and execution. The ideal candidate is analytical enough to understand what is working and why, creative enough to find new angles that break through, and scrappy enough to move quickly from idea to launch.
This is a high-impact role with significant room for leadership and growth. Youâll work closely with the CMO and growth team to build a repeatable system for producing high-performing creative at scale.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Creative Strategy
⢠Own creative strategy across paid social and performance marketing channels, with a strong focus on Meta.
⢠Build and manage a repeatable creative testing framework across hooks, formats, scripts, offers, concepts, personas, and audience segments.
⢠Develop creative angles based on customer pain points, product benefits, trends, competitor research, customer reviews, and performance data.
⢠Think through the full customer journey, from problem-unaware audiences to highly aware, ready-to-buy customers.
⢠Own the pipeline of performance video assets, including UGC, creator-led ads, founder-led content, product demos, recipe content, narrative ads, comparison ads, and social-first concepts.
⢠Analyze creative performance to identify winning patterns, scalable concepts, and opportunities for improvement.
⢠Help improve ROAS, CAC, conversion rate, and revenue through stronger creative strategy and execution.
Creative Production & Execution
⢠Manage the creative process from concept to brief, scripting, production, editing, feedback, and final delivery.
⢠Write compelling hooks, scripts, ad briefs, and creator directions that are clear, strategic, and performance-oriented.
⢠Direct creators, editors, freelancers, agencies, and internal team members to produce high-performing assets.
⢠Build systems for creative ideation, testing, asset organization, feedback, iteration, and reporting.
⢠Ensure creative is both on-brand and built to perform in paid social environments.
⢠Stay on top of social trends, competitor ads, creator formats, and emerging creative opportunities.
⢠Jump in wherever needed to keep creative moving, whether that means writing scripts, reviewing edits, sourcing creators, organizing assets, or helping bring concepts to life.
Strong bonus: Ability to shoot and edit your own creator-style content.
REQUIREMENTS
⢠3+ years of experience in creative strategy, performance marketing, paid social creative, DTC ecommerce, or a performance creative agency.
⢠Strong understanding of paid social creative, especially for Meta.
⢠Deep understanding of what makes video ads convert, including hooks, pacing, messaging, storytelling, offers, and visual structure.
⢠Experience building or contributing to a creative testing system that generates new concepts consistently.
⢠Strong analytical ability and comfort reviewing performance data to understand what is working, why it is working, and what to test next.
⢠Ability to deeply understand a product, customer persona, and the emotional and functional reasons people buy.
⢠Strong creative instincts, copywriting ability, and visual taste.
⢠Comfort developing new creative angles based on product benefits, customer pain points, cultural trends, competitor research, and performance insights.
⢠Highly self-motivated, resourceful, and able to take ownership without needing constant direction.
⢠Comfortable working on a small team where everyone is expected to be hands-on, proactive, and accountable.
⢠Strong collaborator who can work effectively with internal team members, creators, editors, freelancers, and agencies.
⢠Curious, adaptable, eager to learn, and comfortable moving fast in a startup environment.
WHO THIS ROLE IS PERFECT FOR
This role is perfect for someone who loves combining data, creativity, and execution.
You want to understand why an ad works, not just whether it worked. You can look at performance data, customer reviews, product benefits, and social trends, then turn those insights into creative ideas that drive growth.
Youâre comfortable leading the creative process, but youâre also willing to execute. You bring a strong creative point of view, a deep interest in performance marketing, and the hustle to move quickly from idea to launch.
This is an opportunity to help shape the creative engine of a growing DTC brand and play a key role in how Ramen Bae reaches, converts, and retains customers.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
⢠$80,000â$115,000 base salary, based on experience and leveling
⢠Equity options in a profitable, rapidly growing company
⢠Flexible PTO and paid holidays
⢠Health, dental, and vision benefits
⢠Fully Remote

Donât Put Yourself in a Box
Personal Development and Career Growth
- Apr 26, 2024
- Companies need "boxes" (job classifications) to grow and function. This makes hiring, compensation, and career development tractable, and promotes fair treatment of employees.
- If the boxes are too large, a company can't grow. If the boxes are too small, innovation and ownership are smothered.
- The size of a company's boxes is directly proportional to the level of trust employees have for management.
- To get hired, put yourself in the box the company is hiring for. Tailor your resume to highlight those skills and experiences; put yourself out there as a âspecialistâ in the thing theyâre hiring for.
- If aiming for a promotion, demonstrate how your work embodies the behaviors and impacts of the next-level âboxâ.
- Don't let those boxes define you. Your value and identity goes far beyond any job description.
Businesses can't function at scale unless they put people in standardized "boxes"; if you want to be hired and to grow your career, you need to understand that, and understand how to work with those boxes. On the other hand, you can't be reduced to a box, and if you tie your identity to those boxes in your thinking, you'll limit yourself in ways that are unnatural and harmful.
This is like the paradox of Schrödinger's Cat, both alive and dead at the same time. Like with quantum mechanics and the cat, whether youâre in a box or not depends on whoâs doing the measuring: your employer, or you.
My Box Origin Story
My introduction to the idea of âboxesâ came in the late 2000s, when I noticed that people at Google were having a hard time getting hired or promoted if they were doing âoperationalâ work that didnât involve much traditional program management. Whether they were being considered for hiring or promotion, they were told, essentially, âYouâve done some great work, but itâs not program management; weâre not sure what role/ladder is a fit for you, but itâs not this one. Next!â
This was clearly a problemâeven though they didnât do PERT diagrams and Gantt charts, Googlers did important work in these roles, and roadblocks to hiring and promoting them created both operational and retention issues as jobs went vacant and high-performing employees felt their value wasnât being recognized. As a member of both Program Management hiring and promotion committees at Google I had more visibility to this issue than most others; I spoke to a friend of mine in People Operations (Googleâs HR), who turned out to already be well aware of this problem from repeatedly dealing with upset hiring managers and frustrated promotion candidates. Together, we hatched a plan: to create a new job ladder (job classification) for these âoperationalâ program managers to move to, that was better suited to the type of work they did.
We gathered some data, wrote a proposal, and set up a meeting with the SVP responsible for all engineering at Google. The SVP had been in quite a few meetings Iâd presented to before; I knew him to be not only a brilliant and capable leader, but a genuinely nice guy, too, so I had no worries about the meeting. Imagine my shock then, when this âgenuinely nice guyâ started yelling at us, telling my partner and I that we were going to wreck Google culture!
I vividly remember what he said: âDONâT PUT PEOPLE IN BOXES!â He told us Google needed some job classifications, but that our culture required those classifications to be both broad and vague so both employees and their managers wouldnât be blocked from doing whatever needed to be done. The worst thing we could do, the SVP told us, was to make the classification âboxesâ so small people could say âthatâs not my jobââwhich is precisely what he saw us proposing to do!
A year or two before this Google had shifted from having just three job types (over-broadly, they were âengineersâ, âtechnical people that donât do engineeringâ, and âeveryone elseâ) to having around around a dozen (one of which was my ladder, âTechnical Program Managersâ). There had been a lot of debate about whether those boxes were already too small⦠but the senior team had decided 12â15 job categories were acceptableâenough large boxes to make hiring, career development, and compensation more efficient, but not so many that jobs were defined too narrowly. We left his office dejected, but also enlightened: it said a lot to me that this SVP thought it so important to Googleâs culture, a lesson Iâve never forgotten. (Times have changed though; Google now has many more job ladders, including at least 5â10 âoperationalâ ladders broken off from Program Management well beyond what my friend and I had proposed).
Why Companies Need Boxes
Why do we need âboxesâ (job classifications) at all? Wouldnât the world be better if everyone just did whatever they saw that needed doing? The value of boxes to corporations comes down to two things: scaling and trust.
Scaling
If youâre in a small startup, you want employees who can wear many hats, and who wonât feel limited by things like job titles. Because there are so few employees, and because you know everyone personally and need everyone you hire to have an outsized impact, you can afford to put a lot of energy into every individual hiring decision. Compensation planning is pretty lightweight and customized, both because there arenât many people to deal with, and because you want to compensate people based on their contribution to the business, regardless of what their title is. Everyone is a âspecial snowflakeâ.
That changes quickly as your startup growsâyou cross a line where it becomes infeasible to treat every hire as a unique individual, with bespoke hiring and compensation. This is where âboxesâ become necessary: you have to put people into categories, with standards for how hiring, compensation, and career progression work for each boxâitâs the only way you can scale the company. The alternative to this would be to allow an increasing number of managers to continue bespoke hiring and comp within their own areas⦠which leads to the second issue, trust.
Trust
Because startups are so risky, the ability of potential employees to trust the founders is a big dealâif they donât appear trustworthy, theyâre not going to attract the kind of people they need. As the company grows, the number of managers that both employees and senior management need to trust grows, too. At some point it becomes too much: employeesâ willingness to âhave faithâ that managers will make fair and appropriate decisions drops lower and lower, so much so that everything will fall apart without the enforced fairness of standardized boxes.
ð¡
The size of the boxes in a company are directly proportional to the amount of trust employees have in management
Labor unions are the endgame for this sort of trust problem. One of the big rallying points for companies trying to avoid unionization is always to try to convince employees that management has their best interests at heart, and can be trusted. As a rule, unions have close to zero trust for management, andâas a direct consequenceâunions often push for the smallest âboxesâ possible: boxes for very narrow roles, subdivided by seniority, and sometimes further subdivided by location. They see this as the best way to ensure fairness in an environment where management canât be trusted at all. This is the ultimate version of the cultural harm my SVP was worried about.
Boxes and Hiring
Scaling and trust drive companies to put employees into standard categories, or boxes. How do those boxes affect hiring, and, understanding this, how can you better âsellâ yourself as a candidate for jobs?
Most companies above startup size need to hire for boxes, for the reasons given above; itâs just too much work to do anything else. It would be wonderful if recruiters, interviewers, and hiring managers had the time to carefully read and savor every resume that came in, and then spend time meeting with every candidate to pull out nuances that didnât come across clearly in their job histories. Thatâs not the world we live in, though; there are too many candidates to get through, and too few hours in the day.
The usual practice is for recruiters to work with hiring managers to identify standard requirements (boxes, again!) that can be used to screen out people and reduce the number of candidates they need to go into more depth with (hiring managers will usually never see any of those dropped candidates). Those standard requirements are typically based on a template used for all jobs of the same ladder and level, extended with custom specs tailored to the particular role being hired for. In the language Iâve been using in this article, the job requirements are a very clear âboxâ, and the screening process only lets through candidates whose âshapesâ fit that box, like a childâs sorting toy.
Source: Flickr user rosipaw, CC BY-NC-SA 2.0
When there are lots of candidates for a tiny number of jobs, the recruiters donât magically get more time to handle the extra candidatesâinstead, they often deal with the overload by tightening the screening criteria even further: that is, by making the boxes smaller.
Behaviorally, the shift from âstartupâ to âbig companyâ, and the shift from rapid growth to slow growth, show up to candidates as employers become increasingly selective. Startups like generalists; big companies like specialists. If there are few people vying for each job, hiring managers won't care as much about past experience; if there are many candidates, theyâll only be interested in people whoâve previously done the same kind job theyâre hiring for. These trends are amplified when business is tough and hiring budgets are thin: hiring managers become nervous about using their scarce headcount on unproven candidatesâthey need people who have already shown success in exactly the job the manager needs done.
ð¡
Iâm writing this in April, 2024, in a time of high interest rates and widespread layoffs in tech, and when there are lots of AI-based screening tools being offered that promise to save recruiters time; you do the math about the current hiring marketâ¦
Besides being lucky, there are two powerful ways to cut through âsmall box screeningâ:
- Put yourself in the box theyâre hiring for. This means customizing your resume for each job you apply for, or at least for each type of job youâre going after. If theyâre hiring for someone with experience doing X, focus your resume on how youâve been successful doing X (or at least, things like X) in the past. When a recruiter or hiring manager looks at your resume, you want them to jump out of their chair and exclaim: âwow, this person is exactly what weâve been looking for!â
- Pull a Kobayashi Maru by bypassing the whole screening process: use your network of personal connections to get an introduction to the hiring manager. This is probably the single most powerful thing you can do because it exposes you to the hiring manager as a whole person, instead of a peg that fits in a box.
A similar situation arises with promotions: the people making decisions about whether you should be promoted or not donât (usually) have the familiarity with you, or the time, to make a customized decision⦠and doing so would create fairness issues. Instead, they look at whether you fit the next-level box. I want to talk about two parts to this: one related to the job ladder, and one related to the level.
Job Ladder
I vividly remember one promotion committee I served on, where we were deciding whether or not to promote an individual who had unquestionably performed at the next level⦠but the work theyâd done wasnât consistent with the job ladder (work classification) they were assigned to. They had delivered amazing business impact through striking personal initiative, leadership, and hard work⦠but what theyâd done had nothing in common with the sort of work expected for the job ladder, or âboxâ, they were in. Should we promote them, or not? We debated the question for far longer than weâd spent on any other candidate weâd reviewed, called in HR support to advise us, and⦠we couldnât decide. The rules were that âif you canât decide, the decision needs to be ânoââ, so we ended by turning down the promotion and recommending the person for a large cash bonus, instead. Our decision was appealed, and the appeal was denied, too, for the same reason: despite the great work, the candidateâs work was outside the box.
Sometimes the process and people deciding on your promotions will be more amenable to âoutside the boxâ work, but really, regardless of whoâs making the promotion decision, and what their ârules of engagementâ are, your chances of success will be greatly enhanced by you being aware of the box imposed by your job ladder as you go about your work, and as you explain that work to others. To be clear: Iâm not saying to limit what you work onâthatâs the ânot my jobâ problem the SVP at the beginning of the article was talking about! What I am saying is that you should proactively plan how you will describe your work in ways consistent with the box.
For example, if youâre a Program Manager and spent a lot of time creating product requirements (the work of a Product Manager at most companies), when you and your direct manager describe it to others, be sure you both talk about (for example) the work you did to understand what other work was dependent on having the requirements, how you delegated and tracked some of the work on market research, bringing it all together into a single document, how you built consensus on the requirements, communicated them to the engineering team, and then managed scope creepâall things that are part of the description of the Program Management box. This makes it easy for the people who will decide on your promotion to say âHuzzah! They did both the Program and Product Managementâ, instead of saying âThis was great Product Management, too bad theyâre a Program Manager.â
Job Level
Really, this is a topic that deserves (and will get) an article all on its own, but I think itâs relevant to surface it here: in general, higher level jobs arenât just harder/bigger/broader versions of lower level jobs: theyâre different âboxesâ altogether. The next-level behaviors senior people are looking for are often behaviors that arenât exercised much, if at all, at your current level. I think of these as âphase changesâ, analogous to the phase changes water goes through as it turns from solid ice to liquid to gas as you turn up the heat: itâs always the same water, but it looks and behaves differently in each phase. Some of these transitions are more abrupt and noticeable than others, but theyâre definitely there. At Google for example, there are noticeable differences between all levels, but the âphase changesâ are especially acute between levels 5 and 6, and between levels 7 and 8.
The takeaway here is that you can greatly increases your chances of success by understanding what those âphase changesâ are (more senior mentors can be super helpful in this)âwhatâs qualitatively different about the next-level boxâand then work with your manager to proactively plan how you will describe your work in ways that highlight those qualitative differences.
Boxes and You
So after telling you about the importance of âboxesâ, now Iâm going to tell you⦠to avoid them!
This sure looks like a paradox, but let me explain!
Weâve been talking about how companies, managers, and recruiters use boxes, and how, because of scaling and trust, itâs just not practical for them to operate in any other way. Weâd hope that they donât make the boxes too small, and that they have good judgment in how they apply them⦠but boxes are a fact of life in the world of work.
The place where you should avoid boxes isnât in the workplace, though: it's in your head. Itâs completely natural for peopleâs occupation and organization to become a part of their identity⦠but it's harmful to let that go too far: you are not your job, and you are not your job title.
A lot has been written about the psychology of tying oneâs identity to their job, but the thing I want to focus on here is how putting yourself in a box in your own thinking (e.g. seeing yourself as a âProduct Managerâ, as a âGooglerâ, and so on) can mean putting counterproductive limits on your own behavior, and your own thinking about whatâs possible.
ð¡
Youâre much more than, and much more capable than, the box youâre in.
From a career perspective, itâs a good practice to periodically take some time out and take stock of where you are now and how that fits with where you want to go. If you do this sort of self-assessment youâll often decide youâre basically on the right path and just need to make some minor adjustments⦠but sometimes youâll realize that the path youâre on wonât take you where you want to be, and that bigger changes are needed: maybe you should ask your manager for different responsibilities? Change teams? Change job ladders? Even change companies? All of those require seeing beyond the box youâre in.
Even though you need to describe yourself in terms of boxes to get where you are now, if your own thinking is constrained by those boxes, it will be hard for you to see that maybe the best path for you is quite different from the one youâre on. Maybe you should change teams? Roles? Departments? Even change your city, or your employer? Donât get me wrong: I know plenty of people whoâve been in more or less the same job, in the same place, working for the same company, for many years, and theyâre very happy⦠but itâs also common for people stay in the same role because they see that role defining them, instead of just being something they do.
How You Can Bring Order From Chaos, Today
Here are some things you can do now to apply these ideas:
- If youâre looking for a job now, describe yourself as being well inside the box your potential employer is hiring for: tune your resume to the job youâre going after. You should have a different resume at least for every âclassâ of job, and sometimes for each specific job. It can be hard to do it if youâre going after several types of job at the same time, but your LinkedIn resume needs to support the more focused, specialized resumes youâre using. Make sure you highlight the skills and expertise called out in the job ads youâre applying to, and talk about your skill and experience in that area. No one hires generalists, so donât call yourself one in your resume; instead, describe yourself as a specialist in the very thing your target company is hiring for.
- If youâre working toward a promotion now, put yourself in the box you want to be promoted to. Ask your manager and mentors to help you understand the heart of the next-level box, and think about how you can describe your work, behavior, and accomplishments in terms of that box.
- Donât tie your identity to the box youâre in. You are a complete person with a personality, skills, and experience that transcend any mere box, and if you tie up your identity with the boxes other people put you in, you will limit the paths you can take and the things you can accomplish.
I'd love to hear about your experiences with boxes! If you're a paid supporter of this newsletter (hint, hint!) you can add comments below.

As Software Engineer (Team Lead), you will serve as the technical owner for a core area of our retail service cloud, designing approaches, contributing code, and mentoring engineers while driving the roadmap from legacy replacement through new feature delivery.
In your first 6â12 months, success means you have shipped meaningful improvements to the platform, replaced targeted legacy services, and established clear technical standards that the team follows without prompting.
This is a lean team. You will own a lot, move fast, and make decisions with full end-to-end responsibility.

- Mentor junior engineers through code review, pairing, and hands-on problem solving
- Help build the team by driving developer productivity and contributing to hiring decisions
- Strong hands-on experience with TypeScript/JavaScript, React, and Node.js

- Track record of owning a product or service area technically â architecture decisions, code quality, and delivery outcomes
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and elevate other engineers while remaining a significant individual contributor
- Experience replacing or modernizing legacy systems in a production environment
- Comfort triaging competing priorities, planning sprints, and communicating technical details to non-technical stakeholders
- Strong opinions on code quality and engineering best practices, held loosely enough to find the best solution collaboratively
- Experience with retail, e-commerce, or multi-brand platform environments
- Familiarity with cloud-native architectures and microservices patterns
- Prior experience in a technical lead role on a small, high-output team
The people who do best here are builders. They take ownership, move fast, and want to see the direct impact of their work.
- Cross-Functional Impact: Your technical decisions will shape services that power multiple brands across the portfolio â the scope of your work is visible and immediate.
- Skill Building: Work alongside senior engineers who will challenge your thinking, with daily exposure to modern frameworks, platform-scale problems, and AI-augmented tooling.

About the Role
We're hiring a Senior ML Engineer to be the data team's owner of production ML and AI agent systems. You'll take models from prototype to production, build and maintain the low-latency ML API that powers our Next Best Action (NBA) engine, and partner with our HAL team to ship LLM agents that turn NBA recommendations into real conversations with credit union members and partners. This is a builder's role at a builder's moment: NBA is going live, the agent infrastructure is being shaped now, and you'll define how Clutch does production AI for years to come.
About the Team
The Data team today is five people: one data scientist, two data engineers, one data analyst, and one product manager. We're small, ambitious, and shipping fast â two ML models heading to production, an ML API being built, and two AI agents (one customer-facing, one partner-facing) in active development. You'll be the senior technical voice for ML and AI engineering inside the team, and the bridge to HAL, the platform team that builds Clutch's agent runtime. Expect tight feedback loops, real autonomy, and a team that values pragmatism over purity.
What Youâll Do
Within 3 months, you will:
Take ownership of the ML API that serves NBA recommendations, partnering with the data engineer who's been building it, and harden it for low-latency production traffic
Ship your first agent tool contract end-to-end: schema design, handler implementation, structured-error contract, unit tests, deployed via HAL's runtime
Set up the eval foundation for our agents: golden transcripts, rubric-based judges, regression suites that run on every prompt or model change
Build a working relationship with HAL and become the data team's go-to on agent infrastructure decisions
Within 6 months, you will:
Be the primary owner (with data engineer support) of the ML API and the agent tool layer that wraps NBA and our ML models
Have shipped at least one production-grade agent (customer-facing or partner-facing) with prompt versioning, evals, observability, and multi-tenant gating in place
Define the data team's playbook for shipping a new ML model as an LLM-callable tool, end-to-end
Mentor the data engineers on ML/AI patterns so they can confidently support and extend the systems you own
Within 9 months, you will:
Operate as the technical lead within the data team for NBA production AI at Clutch â the person other teams come to when they want to understand how NBA ships ML and agents responsibly
Have measurably improved agent cost and latency (target: 30%+ reduction on P95 latency or per-conversation cost on at least one agent)
Be shaping the data team's roadmap for the next generation of ML and AI products, in partnership with the PM and data scientist
Help us decide what to hire next as the team scales
What Youâll Bring
Required
7+ years of engineering experience, with a proven track record of building and shipping production ML systems â you've taken models from prototype to production and own what happens after deploy
Strong Python â most of the work (ML training, evaluation, the ML API, data pipelines) is in Python, and you're comfortable in production codebases, not just notebooks. Some TypeScript is involved for tool contracts and integration with our agent runtime â you don't need to be an expert, comfort with a second language is enough
Tool-design discipline for LLM consumption. Can take an ML model or data source and shape it into an LLM-callable tool with narrow input/output schemas, identity-required and scope-gated dispatch, and structured-error contracts (RATE_LIMITED, UPSTREAM_ERROR, NOT_FOUND) that the agent runtime converts to graceful tool-results instead of crashing
Eval discipline for non-deterministic systems. You treat evals as the unit-test equivalent for agents: golden transcripts, rubric-based judges, regression suites that run on every prompt or model change. You understand the difference between offline metrics and online evals, and use both
Prompt-shape literacy. You read a system prompt the way another engineer reads code: audience, register, compliance guardrails, template-var allow-list, allowed-tools section. You debug "why did the agent do that?" by reading the prompt and tool descriptions before reaching for model swaps. You've shipped at least one agent where the prompt was version-controlled and reviewed as code
Tool implementation rigor. You build handlers behind tool contracts with identity fields read from request context (never from LLM-supplied args), output re-parsed through the tool's schema before return, structured-error throws on every failure path, and unit tests covering both happy path and each named error. You have a story about a tool you shipped, a bug production traffic surfaced, and how you hardened it
Experience building and maintaining low-latency production APIs (FastAPI, BentoML, or equivalent), with opinions on serving, batching, and caching
Comfortable in AWS (Lambda especially), Docker, and GitHub-based workflows
You use AI tooling actively in your engineering workflow â not as a novelty, but as a default. You'll be expected to demonstrate this during the technical evaluation
Desired
Production agent observability: reading audit rows, distributed traces, per-tool latency and error metrics
Cost and latency tradeoff intuition in agent loops â has measurably reduced per-conversation cost or P95 latency on a live agent
Familiarity with an agent runtime framework (Vercel AI SDK, LangChain, LlamaIndex, or equivalent)
Multi-tenant agent gating experience
Prior SaaS and/or FinTech experience
Nice to have but not required: Databricks, PySpark, Terraform
Please note that this role may evolve as our business needs change, so we appreciate your flexibility and adaptability.
